2026

April – June (Spring Term)

– Aloha! Some of the team gave presentations and gave posters at the MRS Spring Meeting in Hawaii.

– VAMOS Lab Master’s student, Ryan Becquer, was not only accepted to the greatest university in the world as a PhD student but has also received the prestigous President’s Fellowship which is reserved for the top 10% of applicants!

January – March (Winter Term)

– The VAMOS lab welcomes Huan Jiang, a new Postdoctoral Scholar with an impressive resume and publications. Welcome!!! We look forward from learning and collaborating with such an excellent scientist.

– Congratulations to PhD student, Saegis Abbott, for receiving the NSF Early Career Travel Award to present his work at ASME MSEC in June.

– The VAMOS Lab has had multiple transitions from PhD “student” to PhD “candidate” after successful completion of qualifying exams. Congratulations to Kassandra Hernandez and Zach Miller!

2025

September – December (Fall Term)

– The VAMOS Lab welcomes 3 new lab members: Zachary Miller (PhD), Miya Klein (MS), and Ben Holmgren (MS). See the growing team on the VAMOS Lab Team page.

– Adam Bischoff successfully defends his thesis focused on 3D printing of smart material liquid crystalline elastomers. Congrats!  He will begin a new position as a manufacturing engineer at Leidos as a manufacturing engineer.

June – August (Summer Term)

– VAMOS Lab visits the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) and lab of Prof. Mostafa Saber as a kick off meeting for the ongoing Oregon Metals Innovation Complex (OMIC) collaborative project.

– Kassandra Hernandez and Prof. Roach visited Ampere Scientific in Albany, OR and learned about their new technology for Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) monitoring.

  

– Adam Bischoff was awarded the 2025 Thesis Completion Award. Congratulations, Adam!

– Prof. Roach was named the Tom & Carmen West Faculty Scholar which will support VAMOS Lab research for the next 3 years. Thank you for the generous support of OSU and our lab’s mission!

May

– The VAMOS Lab was awarded its first grant from the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center (OMIC) which will focus on AM of high performance materials for automotive tooling.

– Annual team outing to the Oregon Coast (which apparently had not come out of winter yet) and headed for fresh crab meat lunch.

March

-Prof. Roach was invited to present his work on printed electronics at TMS 2025.

– Prof Roach gave an invited seminar at Univ Wisconsin – Madison focusing on 4D printing and smart composite design.

– Ashlei Morgan has successfully defended her MS thesis!

February 

– Elliot Yoo, a local high school student mentored by the VAMOS lab, had his science fair project selected for ISEF International Science Fair 2025.

January

– VAMOS Lab’s paper was selected as the cover article for Advanced Engineering Materials

2024

November – New members have joined over the Summer and Fall, VAMOS has nearly doubled in research students.

August – VAMOS lab receives a grant from Global Hemp Innovation Canter (GHIC) for PhD student Nicolas Gonsalves and Heidi Thiele.

September – VAMOS Lab welcomes three new PhD students: Kassandra Hernandez, Saegis Abbott, and Saman Jamshididana.

September – Seth O’Brien passed his Master’s Thesis defense!! He will begin working at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in October.

February – The first piece of equipment, a TA Instruments Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) machine, was installed in the lab.

January – VAMOS Lab officially began its journey of discovery at Oregon State University!

2023

September – VAMOS Lab welcomes its first PhD student, Adam Bischoff.

August – Prof. Roach accepts a courtesy appointment at OSU while he completes his group’s work at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico.
