Devin J Roach

Tom & Carmen West Faculty Scholar

Devin is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Department at Oregon State University (OSU). Prior to his time at OSU, he was a Senior Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories leading a research group focusing on applied machine learning methods for real-time monitoring and autonomous optimization of additive manufacturing systems. He received his PhD from Georgia Institute of Technology under the direction of Prof. H Jerry Qi.

His research interest lie at the cross-section of additive manufacturing, materials, and structural design. He is particularly interested in how artificial intelligence can be applied to improve and even automate additive manufacturing processes to eliminate user error. Additionally, he is interested in the development and manufacturing of smart/active materials such as shape memory polymers (SMP) and liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) for applications in biomedical devices, soft robotics, and energy harvesting devices.

Dr. Jeremy Herman

Dr. Herman received his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in 2019. Subsequently, he completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering in Fall 2024 from the University of Colorado Boulder in the lab of Professor Timothy J. White. In his PhD, Jeremy researched the deformation mechanics of a class of soft, polymeric materials called liquid crystalline elastomers (LCE) and how new 3D printing technologies can be utilized for unique functional applications of these materials.

Jeremy joined the VAMOS lab group in Summer 2025 as a research associate, and his work is focusing on the miniaturization of 3D printed LCEs to be used as actuators in microrobotics. Jeremy works in close collaboration with the Advanced Materials Lab (AML) at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, NM.

Nic is pursuing a PhD in Material Science and a recipient of the prestigious DOE GAAN Fellowship. He graduated from the Oregon State University Honors College in 2024 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After working on the Formula SAE racing team studying composites, he found an interest in the unique and customizable properties that could be achieved using composite materials. His research interests are focused on using sustainable materials and advanced additive manufacturing techniques such as hemp fibers and frontal polymerization.

Saman is a PhD student and Research Assistant in the VAMOS Lab. He holds a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Iran University of Science and Technology. Saman's research focuses on modeling and simulations using software such as Abaqus. His interests include Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing methods, particularly DLP, as well as Computational Mechanics and Composite Materials. He is passionate about conducting research in these areas along with soft mechanics modeling.

Doctoral student in Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State University. She received her Masters of Science in Future Convergence Engineering from Cheonan College of Engineering, Kongju National University, South Korea, Master of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, and bachelor’s degree from Ekiti State University, Nigeria. Her research interest includes Additive manufacturing and 3D Printing, design of stretchable electronics, and design of polymer composites.

Zach Miller

PhD Student

Zach Miller is a Ph.D. student, mechanical engineer, and pilot with a lifelong passion for aviation. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Montana State University in 2017 and went on to spend eight years in the aerospace industry, specializing in structural analysis and control system design. His current research focuses on nonlinear mechanics, linear elasticity and viscoelasticity, and damage tolerance and control. He is currently developing soft robotic actuators and investigating their mechanical behavior to enable precise, fine motor control.

Saegis Abbott

Saegis Abbott is a PhD Student in an Air Force research project at OSU, recently graduating with his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Aerospace. Previously, he has worked at the Boeing Company in Supply Chain Engineering and Collins Aerospace in Vision and Sensor Systems. As he worked as an Intern for The Boeing Company, he found industrial additive manufacturing fascinating, motivating him to pursue his master's in Advanced Manufacturing, which he is currently completing this summer through the AMP program here at OSU. Previously, Saegis was the manager for the Brick Circuit LEGO store in Downtown Albany, where he managed inventory, projects, staff, and strategy for marketing, supply chain, and product flow. He has always liked engineering, science, building things, problem-solving, 3D printing, and creating rockets, which he has done through involvement in the HART and HALE Aerospace Clubs at OSU. His research focus is on IR Imaging and In-Situ Process monitoring for multi-metal additive manufacturing of complex geometries, tailored alloys, and multifunctional components.

She returned to Oregon State as a master’s student in 2025 after interning at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), where she worked on 3D modeling and microfluidic sensor development. She has collaborated with both industry and international research institutions, including computational materials research in Spain using Python and AI methods, and product development at Araceli Biosciences. Her interests include Additive Manufacturing and 3D printing, CAD, and FEA, and she is passionate about applying these tools in research that creates meaningful impact in the medical field.

Ben Holmgren is an M.S. student in Materials Science with a passion for sustainable materials and manufacturing. He focused on additive manufacturing and research skills while completing a B.S. in Plastics and Composite Engineering at Western Washington University. After undergrad he founded B. Carver Creatives, a prototyping, design and fabrication service, working with inventors and startups to develop their ideas. Additionally, he began working on independent research that he is continuing in the VAMOS lab. He is working to improve the adaptability of composites manufacturing using 3D printing and incorporating sustainable, biobased materials.

Adam completed his BS in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from Oregon State in 2022. He returned to Oregon State as a doctoral student in 2024 after working as a manufacturing engineer in the silicon and small electronics industries. His research interests include developing and improving Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes by optimization of process parameters and multi-material design to best take advantage of the vast AM design space. He is also interested in vat-based processes such as Digital Light Processing (DLP).

Grant is a 4th year Mechanical Engineering major, minoring in Aerospace Engineering. His work focuses primarily on Silicon Elastomers. He currently is working on understanding certain strengths and weaknesses when combining multiple strands of together, under a wide variety of tests. He aims to bring new and innovative approaches to understand how we can use 3D printed elastomer for real world application. Outside of VAMOS, he is the Structural Co-Team Leader for Oregon State University's High Altitude Rocket Team (HART), which focuses on waterjet cutting, composites manufacturing, structural analysis, and much more.

Seth graduated in March 2022 from Oregon State University with a BS in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. During undergrad he completed several co-op internships with Lam Research and PCC Structurals. Seth returned to OSU to pursue an MS in Mechanical Engineering in August 2022 working in the Prototype Development Lab, co-advised by Dr. John Parmigiani. Seth’s main project is focused on the effect of process parameters on mechanical properties for high temperature polymers used in Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). This project is sponsored by the FAA and partnered with Stratasys.

Galen is in his fourth year at Oregon State University, working toward bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Renewable Materials with a planned graduation date of Spring 2025. His current employment is as both an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant and as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the OSU College of Forestry and College of Science. He has previously worked as a member of the USDA Forest Service Youth Conservation Corps (YCC). He is writing his undergraduate honors thesis on the mechanical and hydraulic properties of Pacific yew, a softwood known for its incredibly dense wood and history in the development of chemotherapy medications.
